Also known as: Wester Forest

Westerwald, mountainous region in western Germany lying northeast of Koblenz and east-southeast of Bonn. It is on the right (east) bank of the Rhine and extends eastward for about 50 miles (80 km), between the Lahn River or the Taunus (south) and the Sieg River or Bergisches Land (north), and reaches a high point in the Fuchskaute (2,155 feet [657 m]). There is some iron mining and quarrying of clay (for pottery) in the area and some farming.
