The research by Simon Johnson and his collaborators revealed that societies with political and economic institutions that limit popular participation and exploit the general population tend to be less prosperous. Conversely, societies with inclusive institutions that offer more economic opportunities to their population tend to be wealthier. Their work established a causal relationship between exploitative, nondemocratic institutions and widespread poverty and underdevelopment. In contrast, more democratic societies with inclusive institutions show better economic growth and prosperity.
