Carnian Stage, lowermost of the three divisions of the Upper Triassic Series, representing those rocks deposited worldwide during Carnian time (235 million to 228 million years ago) in the Triassic Period. The stage name is probably derived from the Austrian state of Kärnten (Carinthia), where the stratotype is located. The Carnian Stage is subdivided into two substages, which in ascending order are the Julian and Tuvalian. Carnian marine strata are correlated worldwide by six ammonoid cephalopod biozones, all of which have designated type localities in North America.
