hairball, gastrointestinal obstruction occurring in cats and resulting from accumulation of swallowed hair; the condition is marked by abdominal distension, vomiting, and weight loss. Hairballs can be prevented by regular brushing to remove loose hair or by oral administration of small amounts of petroleum jelly or commercially available medications.
