Due to human activities that result in the release of volatile halocarbon compounds, such as the refrigerant freon and the solvent carbon tetrachloride, the chlorine content of the upper atmosphere is increasing, and chlorine catalyzes the decomposition of ozone, which shields the Earth from ultraviolet radiation that is emitted from the Sun. The Earth’s ozone shield has been progressively depleted, most markedly over the polar regions but also measurably so over the densely populated regions of northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
