The female gonads, or primary sex organs, corresponding to the testes in a male, are the two ovaries. Each is suspended by a mesentery, or fold of membrane, from the back layer of the broad ligament of the uterus. In a woman who has not been pregnant, the almond-shaped ovary lies in a vertical position against a depression, the ovarian fossa, on the side wall of the lesser pelvis. This relationship is altered during and after pregnancy.
