Compound eyes are made up of many optical elements arranged around the outside of a convex supporting structure. They fall into two broad categories with fundamentally different optical mechanisms. In apposition compound eyes each lens with its associated photoreceptors is an independent unit (the ommatidium), which views the light from a small region of the outside world.
