Dnieper River , Russian Dnepr ancient Borysthenes, River, east-central Europe. One of the longest rivers in Europe, it rises west of Moscow and flows south through Belarus and Ukraine, emptying into the Black Sea after a course of 1,367 mi (2,200 km). Several huge dams on the river are used in generating hydroelectric power. Navigable for nearly its entire length, it is an important shipping artery for eastern Europe.
