Michael Phelps, (born June 30, 1985, Baltimore, Md., U.S.), U.S. swimmer. Phelps won six gold medals (four individual, two team) at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games while setting five Olympic or world records. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, he won eight gold medals (five individual, three team) to break Mark Spitz’s record for most gold medals in a single Olympics. Phelps set world records in all but one of his eight gold medal-winning events. At the 2012 Games in London, he captured four gold medals (two individual, two team). In all, Phelps won an unprecedented 22 Olympic medals, including a record 18 gold.
