Bangkok National Museum, art gallery and archaeological museum housed in the former Royal Palace (built in 1782) and devoted to the major arts of Thailand. Established by King Mongkut (Rama IV) in 1851 to house his private antiques collections and opened to the public by Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in 1874, it includes many exhibits of Buddhist art. The museum has a particularly fine collection of prehistoric items and a good selection of art forms and styles illustrating different periods of Thai history.
