Elmira College, private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Elmira, New York, U.S. It is a liberal arts college dedicated to undergraduate study in the arts and sciences. A master’s degree program in education is also available. The college sponsors several study-abroad programs, including marine biology at San Salvador in The Bahamas. The Center for Mark Twain Studies, located at Quarry Farm (Twain’s summer residence for many years), is operated by Elmira College. Total enrollment is about 1,100.

Elmira College was founded in 1855 and chartered by the regents of the University of the State of New York. It was then a college for women, the first such institution to offer a program of study as rigorous as those offered at men’s colleges. It became coeducational in 1969. Sibyl, founded in 1876, is one of the oldest student-run magazines in the United States.
