Paulistas, residents of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, Latin America’s foremost industrial centre. Paulistas are credited with exploring much of Brazil’s interior during the colonial years, helping the country extend its borders in the process. In the 16th–17th century bandeiras, expeditions in search of mineral wealth and Indians to enslave, were central to the economy and culture of São Paulo. The early Paulistas were known for their skills in the wilderness, their distrust of authority, and their prowess as Indian fighters. Today’s Paulistas are known for their aggressiveness and acumen in business and their fast-paced lives.Residents of the city of São Paulo are called Paulistanos.
