Taras Bulba, story by Nikolay Gogol, published in Russian in 1835 in the book Mirgorod. Set on the Ukrainian steppe, “Taras Bulba” is an epic tale of the lives of Cossack warriors. The narrative follows the exploits of an aging Cossack, Taras Bulba, and his two sons. The younger, Andriy, falls in love with a Polish noblewoman and, after joining the garrison of a Polish town besieged by the Cossacks, is caught and shot by his father.
