Yupiit, Indigenous Arctic people traditionally residing in Siberia, St. Lawrence Island and the Diomede Islands in the Bering Sea and Bering Strait, and Alaska. They are culturally related to the Chukchi and Inuit, of Canada and Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland). Although some anthropologists argue that the Yupiit are culturally distinct from the other Inuit peoples, the Yupiit have made a political decision to be designated as Inuit. The traditional economic activity of the Yupiit was the hunting of sea mammals, especially seals, walrus, and, until the latter half of the 19th century, whales.
