linear regression, in statistics, a process for determining a line that best represents the general trend of a data set. The simplest form of linear regression involves two variables: y being the dependent variable and x being the independent variable. The equation developed is of the form y = mx + b, where m is the slope of the regression line (or the regression coefficient), and b is where the line intersects the y-axis.
