More than 200 families of extant and extinct beetles are known. Although there are different classifications of Coleoptera, modern systems are based on the four suborders Adephaga, Archostemata, Myxophaga, and Polyphaga. The latter, which contains about 90 percent of the beetles, includes a number of groups (e.g., clavicorns, serricorns, lamellicorns, phytophagous beetles, and weevils). These groups are sometimes considered as superfamilies or series and sometimes (particularly weevils and relatives) considered as suborders.
