Shakhtarsk, city, eastern Ukraine. Shakhtarsk was established in 1953 by the amalgamation of three local settlements, two of which dated from the 18th century, and was granted city status in 1958. Located on the Donets Basin coalfield, the city features mines that historically have produced high-quality anthracite coal. The town also has produced building materials. Pop. (2001) 59,589; (2005 est.) 55,930.
