Roger Federer, (born Aug. 8, 1981, Basel, Switz.), Swiss tennis player. He won his first Grand Slam tournament, at Wimbledon, in 2003. Federer won a record eight Wimbledon titles (2003–07, 2009, 2012, 2017), five U.S. Opens (2004–08), six Australian Opens (2004, 2006–07, 2010, 2017, 2018), and one French Open (2009). He was the first player to capture 20 career men’s singles Grand Slam championships; Rafael Nadal surpassed that number in 2022. From July 2003 to November 2005 Federer won a modern-record 24 straight tournament finals. He also established records for consecutive grass-court victories (65) and consecutive weeks with a number one world ranking (237). Federer won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games. In 2022 he announced his retirement.
