What did the Viking space probes find on Mars?
A Viking lander, photographed on Earth in its deployed configuration. Beneath the high-gain communication dish antenna (at top) can be seen the lander's two cameras (large domed canisters) and, between them, the partially extended sampling arm (projecting from upper right to lower left). The boom supporting the meteorology sensors extends from the right landing leg. The western side of Candor Chasma, part of the Valles Marineris, Mars. The northern wall (top) shows evidence of having been affected by landslides, and the highly disturbed character of this region suggests considerable geological, and possibly hydrological, activity. This picture is a composite of high-resolution black-and-white and low-resolution colour images taken by the Viking 1 spacecraft. Enhanced colour picture of Claritas Fossae, an area on the southern hemisphere of Mars. The different colours are probably produced by dust on the surface, and also reflect effects of weathering and geologic action. Several large craters are also visible. This image was taken by the Viking orbiter. Martian dune field, as seen by the Viking 1 lander. The dunes on the left bear a close resemblance to sand dunes on Earth. The direction and sharpness of their crests suggest prevailing winds blowing from left to right. The lander's meteorology boom divides the image down the centre. Elysium region, in the northern hemisphere of Mars. The shield volcano Elysium Mons is visible in the upper left; just below it is another volcano, Albor Tholus.
